Biotechnology Entrepreneurship (Cambridge Advance Online)

Biotechnology Entrepreneurship is a University of Cambridge short course that enables learners to: • identify potential advancements from pharmacology, biomedical, wellness devices and agri-biotech and wider biotechnology sectors • recognise new and emerging trends in biotechnology and evaluate them for their potential impact and commercial opportunities • analyse and appraise novel technical advancements from the life sciences and biotechnology for meeting unmet functional needs in conjunction with a critical comparison to existing technologies • assess potential opportunities based from their technical content commercial opportunities and risk-reward ratio • assess the potential commercial markets and identify opportunities for new or existing advancements from the life sciences or biotechnology • produce a business plan with consideration of intellectual property protection angel investors and/or venture capital fundraising market exploitation and income streams – along with business development plans and exit routes with clear reasoning for each.

Skills / Knowledge

  • Identifying advances from the life sciences and biotechnology offering commercial opportunities from which businesses may be developed
  • Critiquing business plans in terms of their strengths and weaknesses covering aspects such as the strength of IP, plans for and appropriateness of approaches for raising finance, joint venturing and commercial partnerships, and market opportunities
  • The skills to develop a business plan appropriate to the participant’s area of work
  • Presentation of a business plan in long and short format for different audiences
